This is the real thing: international racing. In 2012, there were three days of racing and events. We got a couple of parade laps around the track, and there were a dozen opportunities to win hot laps and live pit presences! The track is full of people and campers. Thousands of people sleep around the track for three days -- the ultimate tail-gate! Mazda Canada treated us to a full tent, with food and interviews and time with the racers. And, of course, mx-5 racing!
It's the real thing - the weekend is filled with all kinds of sports car racing series.! Festivities begin Friday early-afternoon, and run through Sunday afternoon. You can attend one day, two days, all three days, or even camp track-side! Thousands of people camp in small tents or giant trailers.
What was it like in 2012? There were 3 to 5 big races every day, the biggest on Sunday, the MX-5 races Sunday afternoon. Mazda Canada invited us into their corral, where we had good food, a tent, special parking, unlimited water, and Mazda company. We had two parade laps early Sunday morning on the track! There were raffle prizes throughout the weekend for pit tours, being a passenger in a real hot lap, and much more. There were a handful of technical lectures by mx-5 racers and mazda engineers, as well as the future of mazda racing and engines.
What did I do? I walked back and forth across the park all day long. There are 10 turns to the track, and each has a totally different view of things. So I went back and forth between my favourite four! I cheered for the local favourite. I attended half of the lectures. I wandered the paddocks and spoke to the racers. I spent time in the pit with media and examined every car.
Free travel. Walking back and forth around the track is really tough. It takes about 10 minutes for me to walk from one side to the other -- and it's very hilly. And my body processes an entire bottle of water in each direction. And it's good for me, I need the exercise. But there are free (charitable donations optional) golf cart transportation continually driving around. Hitch a ride, and you can be anywhere in 3 minutes, happy as a clam.
It's safe, it's outdoors, the facilities are clean and plentiful.
Where do you stay? You can drive in each day. Of course you can camp on site, there are local B&B's, near-by hotels, and slightly farther hotels. Hotels book fast as it's a big weekend with international visitors.
